4 stars today, but I'll know more after much use. January 20, 2008 piglets 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm very interested in buying the entire Mikasa Italian Countryside set, but all I have purchased is this 5 piece pasta set. I love the look. My set arrived packed well, but the large bowl and one of the 4 bowls had glaze missing in the serving/food side. Amazon sent me out replacements with no problem. The second large bowl had some colored specks in the glaze, which I had read others had some with their sets. I'm fine with what few I have. As I rinsed the dishes to get the packing foam off of them, water entered the bottom of the bowls. I did not set them in water. The entire circle of the base turned gray, seen from the inside of the bowls. This would not have any contact with any food inside of the bowl, but does not look good. I did wash them in the dishwasher, it stated that was safe. They did not show any water signs when I removed them. My husband and I really enjoyed our pasta being served in these bowls. Very hearty size, allows plenty room for the biggest serving and bread, as well. I am pleased with these, but can't see them holding up. If they are wet inside and you use them in the micro, I could only guess they would crack. (They can be used in the microwave.) They will absorb any liquid you might have spilled on your counter. My plan to the really put these to the test, before I buy the full set. (Because I don't want to be afraid to use my dishes.) The large serving bowl is very large. If you toss your pasta then serve, this could be perfect for you. I will find other uses for such a large bowl. Down side, finding a place to store something so large that I won't use every day. The four bowls will have many uses. These pieces will look nice with any dishes. So if you want to try before you buy, as I'm doing, pick out a serving piece or the pasta set. If I don't end up with this set, these will still look nice with what ever I do decide to purchase. I'm really hoping they hold up to the test, since it is the pattern that I've been looking for. Last, I just bought a Lenox Christmas set. Since they are both new, it was easy to compare them. I do not think the quality of the Mikasa even comes close Lenox. Most importantly, when my first set arrived with the problems, my first call was to Mikasa. They would not stand behind their product. They told me that it was Amazon's fault for selling me bad dishes. The dishes were packed by Mikasa in a Mikasa box and sold by Mikasa to Amazon. Why would/should Amazon open and inspect every dish. That's Mikasa's job. I was shocked with Mikasa's stupid answer and disappointed that they would not stand behind their own product. Amazon was great and I will feel safe with any order I place with Amazon.
HUGE pieces! November 10, 2007 alpha_grrl (Olympia, WA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this to go with my Italian Countryside place settings, figuring I could use the pieces for lots of things. The serving bowl is really big, it will serve as a salad bowl, probably better than a pasta serving bowl. The individual bowls are nice, big enough for serving bowls almost, but a little shallow. I think they will probably work for soup too. The stoneware seems a little less fine than the dinnerware pieces, more pottery-ish.
