Amazon.com Review
The Deluxe Safety LidLifter is the perfect 7-inch kitchen tool for anyone tired of dodging the jagged edges of cans and lids. Unlike conventional openers, the Safety LidLifter cuts into a can below the rim of the lid, so there are no sharp edges, the blade never touches the food, and the final turn of the crank doesn't inconveniently drop the lid into the can's contents. The turning mechanism works smoothly for both right- and left-handers, and the soft turning knob provides a comfortable grip. Best of all, the cute puffin-beak-shaped lifting clamp means you never have to touch a lid. --Emily Bedard

5 out of 5 stars Quality Can Opener   November 1, 2008
Darin S. Miller (Boise, ID)
Can opener works really well once one learns the new way to attach the opener to the can. Draining excess liquids from cans also requires re-training as the opened lids fits fairly tight. Minor side note: Lids will no longer slide to the bottom of an empty can preventing can-in-can compactness in the recycle bin.

5 out of 5 stars Used to be zero stars   October 19, 2008

I always used to hate this thing. hated it. I love the old fashioned kind... the ones that could slice your neck if you weren't careful. I lead a pretty dull life. There's nothing exciting happening in my world, that dangerous tin can was my way of 'kickin' it up a notch'. But then, i figured out i could hide a Ring Modulator based around a 4001 quad NOR gate, similar to those used in ARP Odysseys, inside an alpo can that appears to be unopened. I'm putting ALL my electronics projects in tin cans now. see what I'm talking about...

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS!!!! You will love it!!!   October 17, 2008
swyzlstyx (downtown houston)
Rarely am I overly impressed with "gadgets" that I might pick up online, and I was definitely skeptical about this one. But after going through SO many expensive and cheap can openers, I couldn't resist. (I kept my old-fashioned dirty can openers in the dishwasher, so they dulled and corroded quickly.)

This has to be not only one of the best "gadgets" I've bought for the kitchen, but one of the most impressive things I've ever bought at all! Not only does it do exactly what it says it does, but it's also pretty good looking for a can opener (is that possible), and probably the most well made piece of gear in my kitchten.

I eat a lot of canned vegetables, potatoes, and beans, every day. Just like the ads say, you can open a can, and put the lid back on it. It doesn't cut the "can", but splits the seal, so the lid goes right back on and the temp in the fridge re-seals the lid. If it doesn't, you can just cover it with a piece of press-n-seal, with no worries of cutting your hand...there are NO sharp edges!

Also, one of the worst things about old-fashioned can openers is that after ONE use, the blade has food on it, and begins growing bacteria. You have to constantly clean them after every use...I left mine in the dishwasher which destroyed them after about 3 months. But now I've been using the Kuhn Rikon for months, and it's still spotless without a single wash. I never comes into contact with food AT ALL.

I guess my biggest concern, albeit a silly one, was that the stainless handle would get fingerprints, which drives me nuts about all my stainless appliances. But the finish on the stainless is somehow super fingerprint resistant...as long as there's no food on my hands, the handle stays spotless. It looks brand new after months of use, and not one cleaning.

Once you learn how to use it (takes a few seconds to figure it out), it works faster than old-fashioned openers as well.

If you keep your opener in a drawer out of sight, you might opt for one of Kuhn Rikon's cheaper models with plastic handles to save money. However, this one is NICE, and I actually put a dedicated hanger for it on my pot rack, since it looks like a piece of "pro" gear!

I don't say this too often...but BUY THIS! You will love it!!

3 out of 5 stars A Little Complicated   August 30, 2008
Julie Schauer (Redwood City, CA, USA)
What kept this product from receiving more stars is its complicated use. First, it's difficult to get on the can, not comfortable to turn and very ackward to take the top off. I was only going to give it 2 stars, but gave it the extra star because it never touches food so the blade never gets contaminated by food in the cutter and always remains clean. However, if I was going to buy another can opener, I would look for one more user friendly.

5 out of 5 stars Can opening precision   August 29, 2008
Jonathan Koehler
The first thing you notice when you hold this can opener is that there is no slop in any of the parts. It's built to very close tolerances and feels solid and well made. I found it very easy (once I read the directions) to engage the opener on the side of the can and remove the lid. It has worked flawlessly so far and hopefully will last for awhile.

One drawback to this type of opener is that it leaves the lip on the lid, so you can't press the lid down into the can to help drain what's inside (like tuna). Of course, this is intentional for a safety opener, but it's something you should be aware of before choosing this style over a conventional one.

The benefit is that the lid never touches the food, and neither does the opener's blade. So you really don't need to wash it after every use.
