    Amazon.com Review
This high-temperature thermometer takes the guesswork out of deep-frying chicken, doughnuts, and french fries or making jelly, fudge, or butterscotch. Its easy-to-read 8-inch face measures temperatures from 100 to 400 degrees F. The face shows proper candy-making temperatures, from "thread" to "hard crack." An adjustable clip on the insulated handle secures the thermometer to a pan. Made of stainless steel with a shatterproof plastic lens, the thermometer measures 12 inches long overall and is dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack

1 out of 5 stars Numbers washed OFF!   August 10, 2008

After having washed this thermometer in the top rack of the dishwasher (which I'm pretty sure the packaging said was okay), all the numbers indicating temperature smudged completely off. Other than being completely numberless, it's a great design!

1 out of 5 stars Great until the numbers disappeared   July 22, 2008

This was a great frying thermometer until all the markings eventually got washed off. It lasted several months and withstood many washings, but then all the temperature markings just started disappearing...now I'm left with with a a thermometer that technically works, but is really worthless.

5 out of 5 stars If you deep fry you must buy this   June 19, 2008

I don't make candy but can see how you would need this thermometer for that too. For deep frying, a thermometer is essential. This thermometer is well made and is a necessity for deep frying. I have a 15K BTU burner on my stove and even with that i'm surprised how much the oil temperature drops when food is added. This helps to maintain a temperature suitable for deep fat frying (350 to 375 degrees F). Any hotter, the oil smokes and any cooler the food absorbs oil and gets mushy. The clip on the back of the thermometer adjusts nicely to almost any size pot.

1 out of 5 stars Expected more from Taylor   April 20, 2008

When I purchased this thermometer, I checked the calibration with boiling water, and found it to be spot on. But the first time I washed it in normal soapy water (no dishwasher; no abrasives) the ink legend came right off. Now I have an accurate thermometer, but I have no idea what it is telling me. I purchased the Taylor brand expecting their commercial quality. But this is more of a dollar store product. Stay away, and save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Works great for frying-no trouble with numbers   April 8, 2008

I don't make candy, but do deep fry occasionally. I use this thermometer with my 14" wok and it works beautifully. Just clip it on the back of the wok, pour in the oil, slide the thermometer up or down to submerge the bulb, and fire it up. I wash mine in the dishwasher, on a shelf, so I have never had a reason to touch the numbers. Have used it at least a dozen times and it looks and works like new.
