great ice cube tray August 14, 2008 hurdler99 (OH) I really like this ice cube tray, some of the negative reviews do have good points to them, but I don't think those points are as bad as they have been made out to be. You will need to push the cubes out from the bottom instead of just twisting the tray to release, no big deal there. I haven't tasted "rubber" or anything else since I started using them, maybe those people didn't wash them first? Yes, it is more difficult to move to the freezer without spilling water. But, I found if you refill it while the tray is still cold, the water will form a very small layer of ice on the top, which helps to prevent the water in the tray from sloshing around when you move it. Another easy way to avoid spilling water is to simply not fill it up the entire way, remember that water expands when it freezes, so you will still get square ice cubes after the water freezes.
Just fine August 8, 2008 Justine Larsen (Powell, WY USA) Can't believe I'm spending my time writing a review about ice cube trays but hey. My wife had these in our shopping cart when I went to buy something else, so I went ahead and got them even tho I suspected most of the negative reviews were correct. And they are, to a point. It is hard to get the cubes out. Just a slightly trapezoidal shape would have helped with this, but the fact that the entire cube comes out in one piece offsets this annoyance. They are a little floppy but not bad; I can fill them and stack in the freezer with one hand. Not any more likely to slosh water around than with regular trays filled to the top. I expect these to be more durable in the long run. We'll see, but we have several cracked "regular" ones that are garbage after 6 months. ====== I knocked these down one star for one reason that I didn't see mentioned earlier: THESE FREEZE MORE SLOWLY. Whether it's that silicone isn't a good heat conductor (see also: silicone hot pads) or that there isn't any air circulation around each individual cube as there is with a plastic tray, it doesn't matter: I put 4 trays in the freezer last night and this morning only one of the 4 was frozen solid. 2 regular trays that I loaded at the same time were also solid. I'm going to rearrange the freezer and try putting these in one layer on the wire shelf rather than stacking them on the "floor" of the freezer. ========= A realization on ice cube trays in this day and age: We had our fridge give out last spring. When we were shopping for a new one, we found that an ice maker added about two hundred dollars to the cost (in-door dispensing feature not included). We didn't care for the fact that the ice maker on our old one often made too much (especially in winter) and the ice would get stale and we'd throw it out and make new, which is a waste of energy. So we decided to do without. But mostly it was the $200 upcharge for what seemed like a lazy luxury. Now that we've had the fridge for 6 months and we've spent about 15% of that savings on various ice cube trays, if these silicone ones don't last for a few years and keep us happy enough to not be buying more, different, trays in a few months, well then I can see that projected out over the life of this fridge, we might very well spend that $200 savings just buying ice cube trays! Food for thought, your mileage may vary. Have a good day. EDIT: I see my wife's name is associated with this review despite the fact that I'm logged in and see "Welcome, Scott" at the top of the page. Oh, well. EDIT: I neglected to mention the shape of the cubes. They're cubes. That is very cool. If you're entertaining and want to put together an attractive cocktail... if you have an ice maker that cranks out those half-moon things, well I would crush those up to disguise them. These can go from freezer to highball and look like something from a magazine. What a time-saver! LOL ridiculous but hey. EDIT: one drawback that may become critical over time: The sides of these cubes are flat. Duh. But that means if you dump them into a bin in the freezer, those flat sides will sometimes be in full contact. This makes the cubes more likely to freeze together permanently. So stir stir stir those cubes in the bin once in a while. Rotate! First in, First out!
Excited about an ice tray? August 5, 2008 Beantown I see a lot of people complaining about the ice being hard to remove. This completely baffles me. These are the easiest cube trays I've ever used. Never had a problem getting a cube out, spilling or anything. They take up less space and when you only need a few cubes they are so easy to just flip upside down and pop out what you need without the whole tray of ice spilling out. I bought one set to try them out and loved them. I threw out my old rubbermaid trays and bought a couple more. Also how cool is it to make a cocktail with ice cubes that area actually cube shaped?
Great for homemade baby food August 3, 2008 Santella L. Larson (Pittsburgh, Pa) Tovolo Perfect Cube Silicone Ice Cube Trays, Set of 2, Dark Blue I bought this item specifically to store homemade baby food. It works perfectly. They store easily in the freezer, they don't have any funny taste to them, and I can pop out just ONE cube of baby food very easily! I highly recommend this item for that purpose. They are also very easy to fill because they are completely flush.
Makes ice cubes with yucky flavor July 27, 2008 Corinna C I bought my Tovolo ice cube trays last year to replace some cheap plastic trays which barely lasted six months. I decided to fork out three times as much as the next-most expensive tray sold for believing that I was paying more for quality and function. I was happy with the product at first, but the trays began to develop a distinctive chemical odor. I tried cleaning the trays in several different ways (dish soap, vinegar, and ultimately bleach), but nothing was able to eliminate the smell, which was very unfortunate because the ice cubes picked up the smell and flavor of the silicone. I am now using Rubbermaid trays which, while not as sturdy as the Tovolo trays, create ice cubes that don't make my drinks taste yucky.
