5 out of 5 stars pastry board   February 22, 2008

I have been looking for a board like this to send my daughter-in-law for years. This is a beaut, pay attention to the "mineral oil" requirements, and all will probably enjoy this as much as can be done.

It isn't a "cutting board", but if one wished to do so the opposite side from the pattern would be the best place it seems to myself. You can always "hide" the scars you make by keeping one side for pastry, and the other for a "cutting board". Just keep them lightly oiled after washing them; either side.

The board should last a lifetime if well cared for. If abused it won't last a generation.

5 out of 5 stars Just perfect   January 17, 2008

I'm a constant cook, which means I'm always in the kitchen. I moved and needed to protect a new kitchen island and bought three or four different boards out there in the brick and mortar. All of them curled. It has something to do [so I think] with the carved runnel on one side, but what ever, a curved board is no good at all, and I just couldn't find a runnel-less one. This one lays flat and it looks good as well. So I'm happy.

Update: A few months down the road I'm sorry to say that this one curls as well. Bummer.

4 out of 5 stars Pastry Board   January 13, 2008

I really needed a pastry board and this one met my needs. The only slightly negative thing I noticed was some roughness of the wood. I felt it could have been sanded better and there were a couple of idents on one of the corners. Otherwise, this is an very nice product.

I bought this board for my daughter for Christmas. She has not used it yet. What held her back was that the finish is VERY rough. She tried oiling it, but that did not help smooth out the finish.

3 out of 5 stars Warps, not a cutting board   October 12, 2007

I bought this product as a pastry board and cutting board.

I found it fine for pastry, although it almost immediately needed an oil surface treatment. A little scrubbing is needed to get the flour and bits out of the markings which are imbedded in. If you use the markings, you will find yourself converting to metric or rolling sidewise to use the side markings which are oddly placed. Otherwise, it was sturdy enough and a good size for most home baking needs.

However, it should NOT be used as a cutting board. It can't be cleaned with even a small amount of soap and water without warping. It seems to be the way it's put together. I flattened it back out with some heavy pots, but when I lifted them off and let it sit it started to warp again.

While a lot of the reviews have mentioned the other uses, it is NOT listed as a cutting board for a good reason. This really should have been made more clear. Otherwise, a good pastry board for the price.
