Amazon.com Review
These two accessories, which may be used with all KitchenAid household stand mixers, turn many tough kitchen chores into walks in the park. The strainer, for example, converts cooked apples and pears into sauces for preserving or immediate consumption. Freezer jams are a snap; so is fresh tomato sauce. Baby foods can be made in quantity and frozen. The grinder is equally versatile--think chuck or turkey for fresh hamburgers; Parmesan for pasta or cheddar for quesadillas; peppers, onions, and tomatoes for salsa; apples for chunky sauce. The grinder has two plates, coarse and fine, the latter of which converts stale bread into crumbs in a jiffy. Both strainer and grinder assemble and disassemble quickly and easily without tools, and most parts are dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack

5 out of 5 stars Very useful product   October 9, 2008

I've now used the vegetable strainer for tomatoes and apples to make sauce and it performed beautifully (but make sure you don't accidentally try to strain a cinnamon stick.) Also, I have used the food grinder portion on onions, garlic and carrots. You have to really push those hard fresh vegetable into the grinder but it still beats grating with a hand grater.

Cleaning some of the parts can be challenging. The white auger has a hallow center with a small hole. Food gets packed in there and you need a pipe cleaner to fish it out.

I imagine I'll be using this product a lot over the years as I do much home food preservation from my garden. I do like the ease of use.

Fantastic! After using a foley food mill for many years to make apple sauce from our apple trees and hating every hour, this item worked perfectly, requiring only a fraction of the time, including the clean up.

4 out of 5 stars Best grinder and strainer out there   February 20, 2008

Frankly, the thing is the best. First, because it attaches to a mixer it's strong. Second, the blade for the grinder is one of the best designs made (even better than some of the professional hobart models according to a Chef friend). There are some quibbles: 1) the tray is small 2) the neck for stuffing is narrow and can take a bit to get the hang of how to tamp down effeciently, especially when grinding meat. Furthermore, the strainer is perfect for applebutter making since you need to leave the peels in for the pectin and take them out when done. This way there is no fussing with cheese cloth bags,...etc. It's as easy to make as applesauce (I leave the skins and seeds in for that, too and it's much better).

Some other reviewers don't like the current handle but let me tell you why I think it's better than the alternative. The old wooden one had a bigger problem with suction (pulling food back out of the grinder screw when you pulled up for some foods) as would any one with a solid as opposed to a cross design. And this way you have a handy way of losening the threaded cap (a real chore when your hands are all messy).

Take away: If you are interested in making applesauce, applebutter, sausage, or just about any infant food, this is the device to get.

The Fruit & Vegetable Strainer saves hours of time when making fresh tomato sauce! We used to use a folley food mill for straining our cooked, home grown tomatoes, now its for sale on ebay... the KitchenAid Fruit & Vegetable Strainer is easy to use and in minutes we have fresh tomato sauce for pasta.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Kitchen Aide attachment   December 7, 2007

I received the Kitchen Aide vegetable/fruit strainer attachment in record time and used it the next day to make some apple sauce. It worked well but had a little trouble getting it together the first time. I did have to run the apple sauce through it several times to extract all the apple pulp but had to do same with my manual extractor and this was much easier and faster. Works good--glad I bought it and the price at Amazon was great with the free shipping and excellent service.
