Product Description
While it should be noted that vacuum packaging is not a substitute for canning, you can keep food fresh up to 5 times longer with this method. Use your FoodSaver vacuum sealer and this lid to keep the contents of mason jars fresh longer, saving you time and money.

Amazon.com Review
For those who cook large quantities of food for storage, FoodSaver vacuum packaging systems offer excellent protection against food spoilage and freezer burn. This jar sealer attachment fits on pint- and quart-sized Mason jars and is for use with any FoodSaver machine that has an accessory port. The lid forms a tight seal on Mason jars while tubing (sold separately) inserts through the top and removes air from the jar with the help of a FoodSaver machine. The jar sealer works equally as well in packaging liquid foods, such as jams, sauces, or mustard, as it does for dry goods, such as brown sugar or spices. The sealer can even re-seal the same container multiple times (in case someone keeps dipping into the stored jars of raspberry jam). Vacuum packaging with this lid can keep food fresh three to five times longer than keeping it in a plastic food storage container in the refrigerator; however, it is a different process from canning and should not be confused with traditional canning methods. --Cristina Vaamonde

5 out of 5 stars A great add-on for your FoodSaver!   September 23, 2008

It's no secret that the bags for the FoodSaver are expensive. Enter the Regular Mouth Jar Sealer. This is great for items that you want to keep vacuum sealed in between uses. Think "dry goods" such as beans, macaroni, corn starch, brown sugar, etc. For those that are not familiar with exactly what this does I will give a brief expanation. With this jar sealer you can take a standard canning jar, put the desired product inside, slap on a good canning jar lid, and vacuum seal it using the 'canister' button and the vacuum hose that came with your FoodSaver. You then remove the jar sealer to use again and again. As long as you are careful when removing the canning jar lid it can be used over and over again. The companion product to this is the Wide Mouth Jar Sealer which is the same but for wide mouth jars.

5 out of 5 stars Use this "trick" and it works great!   September 19, 2008

HERE'S THE TRICK I FOUND: (1) make sure the tubes are well-attached to the white jar sealer part and the machine (2) PUSH DOWN ON THE WHITE JAR SEALER while the machine vacuums. It works great!

I figured this out when I noticed that there is a rubber ring inside the jar sealer top and if it's not pressing down enough on the jar, the vacuum isn't as effective.

I read the previous reviews with interest - what contrasts of opinions! I just tried this product and found it to work perfectly. I tried both the wide and regular mouth sealers. They both work perfectly well. I used new lids. I did not heat them before using.

I didn't have to use two lids, either, when I pressed down on the jar sealer top.

As far as the reviewer who tested the amount of air in the jar - I just know that it is impossible to achieve such a tight seal on the jar lids without a proper vacuum. Removing the lids is as difficult after this vacuum sealing as it is with traditional canning - there is definitely a great amount of air gone from the jar to produce such a tight seal. So, in my opinion, it does a great job.

Make sure the tubes are connected properly and firmly, press down on the sealer while it's vacuuming and you should get great results.

I'm thrilled with this product.

P.S. The wide mouth jar sealer did come with a plastic attachment tube, but the regular mouth jar sealer did not. Also, I don't recommend storing any powdery substance (i.e. flour) as the vacuum process sucks some of the flour up and under the lid, making the seal inefficient. It's best for heavier substances like rice, beans, cookies, nuts, candy, etc.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible item   September 7, 2008

Terrible item, I returned the entire foodsaver device because the wide mouth jar sealer didn't work.

The older white foodsaver worked better on jars.

I guess everyone wants stainless steel now to go with new appliances, but this thing is over engineered doo doo.

5 out of 5 stars Better than before   September 5, 2008

The wide mouth sealer has always been a gem, but in the past, the regular one was hit or miss. I recently bought a new one, and it has worked flawlessly. I've sealed at least 50 jars with it; all have sealed on the first try. Great product and so much easier and faster than using canisters to seal jars. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Very useful addition to my Foodsaver!   June 14, 2008

I use my Foodsaver vacuum sealer all the time, to seal food in special plastic bags. But some things, like rice and beef jerky, puncture the plastic bags. So this canning jar sealer was just what I needed. I put rice (or spices, flour, cornmeal, salt, any dry item) in a jar, set the metal lid on top, apply this jar sealer, and let the vacuum do its job. In 30 seconds the jar lid is securely vacuumed to the jar, and the contents are safe from bugs, mice, moisture and spoilage. I also bought the large-mouth jar sized sealer, and I've used them both many times.

Do not use this jar sealer for canning fruits, vegetables or other wet foods. Anything that would spoil at room temperature needs to be canned using a pressure canner or water bath method.
