Product Description Pfaltzgraff Winterberry "Perfect Pie Plate" features a snowy white stoneware body decorated with a festive red and green holly pattern. This 9.5-in. "Perfect Pie Plate" will bake your favorite pie evenly thanks to its unglazed bottom. Fillings won't overflow because the charming cardinal pie bird will allow excess moisture to escape. As fall turns to winter, bright holly berries make their appearance, and are the most traditional of Holiday evergreens. Winterberry is the holiday classic that brings this timeless motif to life in elegantly sculpted dinnerware & serveware, beautiful glassware and joyous giftware.
Amazon.com Review Careful thought went into the making of this Pfaltzgraff pie plate. While the inside is smoothly glazed so that crust won't stick, the underside is left unglazed to distribute heat for even baking. Included with the plate is a ceramic pie bird, in this case a cheery red cardinal, which sits in the middle of the pie during baking to vent steam, thus preventing filling from overflowing and helping to produce a crisp crust. Snowy white with the delicate green holly and red berries of the Winterberry pattern, the pie plate looks lovely filled with any kind of pie, and coordinates with a full range of Winterberry dinnerware and serving ware. Made of durable stoneware, the pie plate is safe for the oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. Pfaltzgraff covers the pie set with a five-year warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

Help on how to use August 22, 2008 afrowoman I just ordered one of these and found this info on how to use it : "You put the bottom pie crust in the pie plate, then center the bird on the bottom crust and add filling around. Put a hole in the top of pastry crust top, press crust around bird head. Bake and serve with bird. This pie bird allows the steam inside the pie to release thus giving you a PERFECT PIE - no more soggy or runny Pies." Hope this helps.
great to look at... but how do you use it?? March 3, 2008 B. A. Carter (Covington, KY) I bought this item for my mom who makes lots of great pies - I thought it would be funny for her grandkids (my nephews) to be presented with a pie that has a bird coming up out of it! But none of us family members can reach consensus on how the bird is supposed to be placed in or on the pie. I thought the plate/bird would come with instructions, since I'd never heard of or seen anything like this! Does the bird go IN the pie or on TOP of the top pie crust? How do you get the top crust on, if the bird is already in the pie? Won't the pie filling bubble up out of the bird's mouth? [which would also be pretty darn funny in its own way]. Anyway, we can't agree about anything except it's funny and fun and we're all glad to have it. If anyone cares to illuminate me/us, I'm all the happier for it!
Perfect pie plate perfect gift January 20, 2008 N. Ward (San Antonio, TX United States) I recently purchased perfect pie plates with a cardinal pie bird for three relatives as Xmas gifts. For hard to buy for relatives that you seldom see, they are the perfect present. All three of the recipients were thrilled with their pie plates, especially with the pie bird. I wish I had bought one for myself. Nancy Ward
It really works! January 7, 2008 Kim Dyer (Holt, MI USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Usually when I bake an apple pie I have to clean the over afterwards. I was skeptical, but this REALLY works to keep it from running over. And it's beautiful in presentation too.

The pieplate is wonderful and the little cardinal is a cute bonus. I leave the bird sitting out on my windowsill and it brightens my day just by looking at it.
