5 out of 5 stars Over 12,000 hours of dependable operation...   August 28, 2008

While checking Amazon in the course of recommending this fan to a friend, I was surprised by the mediocre rating people had given it and decided to add my experience to the reviews. Like Richard Shrum above, I'm confused about what fan some of the negative reviewers were talking about. A few of their comments don't seem to compute with the fan I own, which has 3720 marked on its frame, matches the picture above, and is listed on Lasco's website.

I've owned mine since April 2005 and have run it as a window fan (on low) from eight to eighteen hours a day, for about 325 days each year, and it still operates as well as it did on day one. With this kind of use, I've sort of expected something to go wrong or burn out, but nothing has. All I've had to do is turn it on, turn it off, and clean it every four or five months - a fifteen minute chore.

As I was writing this, I got to wondering just what my use actually amounted to. Based on very conservative estimates, I figure my fan has run about 3700 hours each year, or about 12,200 hours since I bought it. Impressive as that figure is, get this - since the fan runs at 635 RPM on the low setting, that means the fan's motor, bearing, and blade have revolved over 460 million times and still counting! (Check my math if you want, I sure did: 635 x 60 x 12200 = 464,820,000.)

So I think you can see why, for me, this Lasco 3720 has been what all appliances should be, but seldom are: simple, effective, dependable, and reasonably priced. Who knows, maybe there have been quality control problems or production changes since I bought mine. Nevertheless, the basic design has worked exceptionally well for me, and I don't think you should overlook this model if it looks like the meets your requirements.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD FAN   June 18, 2008

I BOUGHT THIS FAN FROM AMAZON. AND IT ARRIVED IN GOOD PACKING I PLUGGED IT IN AFTER I OPENED THE BOX. AND THIS FAN REALLY BLOWS OUT GOOD AIR. ALOT CHEAPPER THEN A A/C UNIT. AND COOLS YOUR ROOM DOWN BY 7 DEGREES IN A MATER OF MINS. WELL IT DID FOR ME. THE PRICE IS KIND HIGH BUT WELL WORTH IT I THINK..

1 out of 5 stars Failed with maybe 50 evenings of use in moderate temps   June 14, 2008

I bought this fan about a year ago at a local store where I could see it before buying it. It was inexpensive and appeared well-constructed. Permanent split, capacitor motor with a sturdy cast-aluminum motor housing and a hefty 5uF 250 VAC capacitor mounted beneath. Decent fit and finish everyhere.

But despite appearances, the fan failed this week. I turned it on when I went to bed, and awoke to silence in the morning. I'm the sort to open things and see why they failed, and in this case it was the thermal protective fuse inside the motor. The evening it failed it was running in an open window with temps in the 70s and there was no reason for the motor to get that hot. The blades are clean and turn freely. I used the fan only about 8 weeks of evenings last year - not in the winter, and not when the summer heat called for A/C. So this fan self destructed after maybe 50 evenings of use in moderate temps.

The thermal fuse is non-resettable and soldered in place; my time to repair it would be more than the fan's worth, and so would be the cost of return shipping to try to claim the 1-year warranty. I think I am going to try a different brand, because I was not expecting a box fan to be something to replace every season.

I buoght this fan at Wal- Mart and it is five dollars cheeper there than on amazon. I was looking at other reviewes and don't see how bad this fan is. It is super powerful. I love this fan! It does a great job circulating the air conditioning. THIS FAN BLOWS!

2 out of 5 stars It blows, which is all that one expects from a fan   August 24, 2007

The Lasko 3720* is a run-of-the-mill box fan, except for the "Weather Shield" motor. This allows the user to leave the fan in a window during all but heavier storms, without fear of damage. Construction is adequate, about what I would expect from a fan in this price range. Not sure how long the fan will last, but with the current heat wave, mine is getting a workout. Note that the 3720 is no longer shown on Lasko's website, and they don't appear to offer an equivalent model.

    * The 3720 is NOT the model pictured in this listing. The model shown is actually a Lasko 3900 Performance Air Cleaner, which has a pleated paper filter on the intake side.
