Aureus casts a youthful brilliance on modern fine dining. Flouting traditional design boundaries, Villeroy & Boch embroiders the translucent bone china with gold filigree on an aquamarine background, then splashes large tangerine, sapphire, and fuschia flowers across the surface of select pieces, such as these salad plates in the Blossom variation. The overall effect is a combination of golden opulence-hence the name Aureus, which means gold in Latin-and playful exuberance. Available here in a set of six, the all-purpose 8-1/2-inch plate not only holds a side salad or dessert, but a scone at breakfast or sandwich at lunch. Both the Blossom salad plate and the regular salad plate feature a crisp white center with the same wide aquamarine border overlaid with gold floral filigree; however, the regular plate omits the large colored blossoms. One of the delights of Aureus is the variety of filigrees found on the different pieces; the mix-and-match florals and geometrics create a lighthearted sensibility for parties and showers. Due to the gold trim, Aureus is not suitable for microwave use but may be cleaned safely in the dishwasher. The china is imported from Germany. --Ann Bieri
