Product Description
Today, 58 percent of American households consist of only one or two people, yet most cookbooks still contain recipes designed to serve 6-8. In this follow-up to the bestselling Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook, Beth Hensperger offers 125 new recipes specifically designed for the increasingly popular 1 1/2 to 3 1/2-quart slow cooker. This is the perfect book for busy singles and small families who want the convenience of a small slow-cooker-made meal without sacrificing wholesomeness and flavor.

2 out of 5 stars A little testing couldn't hurt ...   May 20, 2008

This book caught my eye with what seemed to be innovative recipes. That is, until I actually tried some. I gave the author the benefit of my doubts regarding the use of items that normally one wouldn't consider slow-cooking - like pork tenderloin. Until I cooked her pork tenderloin with rhubarb recipe, I didn't know it was possible to create shoe leather from tenderloin. My family has expressly forbidden me to try anything else from the book. I have only myself to blame. I was so taken in by the rhurbarb sauce that I overlooked her nonsensical suggestion of 6-7 hours of slow cooking for a tenderloin. Believe me, one thing it wasn't was "fork-tender."

This book is just another blaring example of the flood of cookbooks out there with recipes that haven't been tested. Don't encourage these authors by buying their books. If you want a good cookbook for the slow-cooker, it's tough to beat any of Mable Hoffman's. Just because they ARE your mother's slow-cooker recipes, doesn't make them bad or boring.

This book has some great recipies and works well for individuals like me - one that is not an expert at cooking. My wife was a gourmet cook and often used a crock-pot to prepare wonderful meals. Her passing left a void in my life, including the need to learn how to cook. Now I can prepare great meals that remind me of the "old days." Furthermore, I can the the crock-pot do the work while I continue to write. I even sent a copy of the original book to my daughter. This is a book well worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely not the same old slow cooker recipes   March 22, 2008

Yes, there are some unusual spices for a number of the recipes. I have no idea where to get nasturtiums for the Nasturtium Butter (especially since nasturtiums are annuals). But, there are some that do not ... such as the Barbecue Pulled Chicken. It is made from ingredients usually already in your cabinet, and it tastes fabulous! There are numerous recipes for different kinds of chili. Some use dry beans and some use canned beans. One even uses nothing but vegetables. So, there are a number of usable recipes (some easier than others). The portions are generous for 2 people, which is great for the empty-nesters. Most of the recipes use the fattier thigh meat instead of leaner breast meat (the author obviously prefers thigh meat). I just go ahead and use breast meat, and the recipes have worked out great. There are recipes for making your own chicken broth and turkey broth using wings. I'm not sure the author realizes that, due to their popularity, wings are priced higher than breast meat! Not an economical solution; but, it is a solution for those who can't have the high sodium and sugar found in commercially prepared broths. So far, I'm really enjoying recipes that are NOT centered around another can of condensed soup. There is no nutritional information given for any of the recipes.

4 out of 5 stars I do cook out of it.   March 18, 2008

(But the person who has difficulty buying groceries in rural Hawaii may have fewer problems than someone in rural Tennessee--not infrequently it's a 60 mile round trip for cilantro in the winter.)

From what I've done--four or five recipes, the prize is one of the recipes that sounds as though it might be weird and dreadful. The (I really think the name is an oxymoron) white vegetarian chili made with zucchini and hominy.

She does use a lot of packaged ingredients, for instance bottled salsa or spaghetti sauce. Very good for those of us in odd rural corners of the world.
