5 out of 5 stars Used over 1,000 times with no problems   July 5, 2008

I live in Japan and flew to Guam in the fall of 2004 for a taste of America. While there I went to the world's biggest k-mart and stocked up on badly needed American sized products. I saw this food steamer for around $40 and decided to try it.

Since then I have used it well over 1,000 times and that's really a conservative estimate. Sometimes I cook three meals a day in it. In the morning it hard boils eggs or cooks them scrambled. For lunch it cooks frozen vegetables along side salmon steaks. Then for dinner it cooks chicken breasts.

I can honestly say I have never had any problems with it and I have never cooked a meal that was less than perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Bad Steam, Bad Customer Service   August 8, 2007

After 8 years with a really great steamer that finally gave out, I purchased the above steamer. Big mistake. It worked o.k. for the first two months, and then would not hold the time punched in and would not reset. Have contacted their customer service 2 times with no responce at all. Will chuck this one and try another company, but will check out customer service on any one I purchase. I will never purchase a Rival product again.

1 out of 5 stars An expensively bad design   July 18, 2007

We bought this steamer to replace a much-used Black & Decker steamer that had finally worn out after seven years.

Out of the box, the Rival looked pretty iffy - instead of sturdy one-piece molded steaming trays, each of the trays was composed of an outer ring with a removable bottom. Maybe this was to make cleanup easier, but in daily use it meant having to assemble each tray before using them. Nothing huge, but annoying. Another annoyance, was that while the trays looked like they were the same size, and were not marked as top or bottom, there was a definite size difference and stacking order that has to be followed.

The big problem was that after a month of use we went from getting acceptable results on a variety of steamed items (rice, veggies, tofu) to having things come out unevenly or under-cooked. very disappointing.

Bought for my octogenarian father. Problem w/shutting off prematurely even though plenty of water. First contact w/Rival by 800 number (which you have to get from website, not on paperwork w/appliance) yielded no results. Antonline (vendor) said get Rival to replace, but if we have a problem they will replace, just takes longer. Filled out website form w/Rival. 1-1/2 weeks later, no reply. Called again, more insistent, they will ship a replacement 7-10 days so it looks like its getting taken care of, just a lot of work to get them to respond.
Dad likes the steamer, when it works. Makes nice healthy steamed vegetables, then puts on a 1/2 stick of butter! What can I say, he's in his eigthies!

It is so easy to use and the 8-Quart size is big enough for me to steam 2 fishes at the same time. Love the product. Will recommend it to anyone who is interested to get a steamer.
