3 out of 5 stars 18 months later, off to the thrift shop   September 8, 2010
Read for Pleasure
I have been cooking with slow cookers for 15+ years and this was my first non-Rival cooker. I had a perfectly good Crock-pot with a missing handle (my fault) and had also recently broken a Versaware (my fault again, but I really dislike Versaware) cooker.

With so many positive reviews and reasonable price, I went for this model. I had a year of satisfaction with the exception of the lid not fitting so tightly after a while--the metal container warps a little after use. It has the problem of most cheaper non-stick surfaces: it's great until it starts peeling. Not one to be put off with a battered kitchen appliance, I kept using it, but now it is undependable.

As it stands now, 18 months later, the warming temperature may not be hot enough to be safe anymore, because the low heat setting doesn't cook the food when using the longer time called for in slow cooker recipes. Unlike standard cooking, you can't keep opening the cooker to check done-ness because it loses heat and moisture every time. So another lucky college student gets to cope with it while I return to Rival.

West Bend 84905 5-Quart Oblong-Shaped Slow Cooker
I am very dissapointed in my new West Bend Slow Cooker. I had a West Bend Cooker like the one I ordered for over 30 years. I loved it and ;used it often. The heating element finally gave out, I wanted one just like my old one but it is not. The handels on my old one never got hot and you could hold on to it, the new one does not have the same handels. The heating elemnt does not get as hot. I was making beef stew last week and it did not even cook on high for 8 hours, I had to fix someting else for dinner and start cooking it again the next day.So Sorry

Husband has one from years ago that cooks like a champ, this one the top doesn't fit tight making cook time a bit longer. Can't find them in a store anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great product, but not a substitute for crockery style cooker   April 20, 2010

I have had this West Bend cooker for 11 years. Though I don't use it all that often, it has been reliable. I have never had any problem with it whatsoever. It heats fairly quickly and the base can be used alone as a small electric skillet. It is easy to clean, lightweight and easy to store. It's oblong shape is also good for long pieces of meat.
However, if you are looking for a slow cooker to set before work and leave cooking all day, I would not recommend this one. I have tried to use crockery cooker recipes in it, but it cooks too fast for that, even on the low setting. If you are looking for a product that will cook a meal in a few hours (as opposed to all day) then this product is more suited to you. Be aware, however, that because all the heat comes from the base instead of being distributed throughout the pot (as in crockery cookers), an unturned piece of meat will generally overcook on the bottom side if left for more than 6 hours.
