Product Description Lauren Willig continues the exciting series with her fourth novel, The Seduction of the Crimson Rose, featuring Lord Vaughn, the delightfully devilish spy from The Masque of the Black Tulip, and Mary Alsworthy, the raven-haired beauty whose sister accidentally stole her suitor in The Deception of the Emerald Ring.

Another Success for Willig September 9, 2008 Story Circle Book Reviews (www.storycirclebookreviews.org) Mary is an "old maid" whose marriage options seem to have vanished, yet the last thing she wants to do is rely on her new brother-in-law--and former lover--to finance another London season. She agrees to a secretive assignment from the Pink Carnation through the powerful and mysterious Lord Vaughn. She will infiltrate the ranks of the dark and elusive French spy, the Black Tulip, and in return Lord Vaughn will pay for her final chance to find a husband. She unexpectedly finds love and possible happiness, but has she gotten herself too deeply involved in the world of death and deception to survive? At the same time, the author takes us to modern-day Eloise Kelly as she discovers the story of Mary and Lord Vaughn and herself becomes romantically involved with a descendent of the infamous Vaughn. Willig intricately intertwines the stories of past and present for an enjoyable web of love, lies, intrigue, and danger. Lauren Willig's The Seduction of the Crimson Rose is a well-written addition to her historical spy series. Her prose is intelligent and detailed. Her characters are engaging and entertaining. This was the first of Willig's stories that I've read, and I wouldn't hesitate to read another of her adventures with the Pink Carnation. by Jennifer Melville for Story Circle Book Reviews reviewing books by, for, and about women
Fans of spy and historical mystery books will relish this story September 6, 2008 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) Lauren Willig's SEDUCTION OF THE CRIMSON ROSE is narrated by stage actress kate Reading, who lends an impassioned voice to this modern day 'Pride and Prejudice', continuing a series about Pink Carnation spies during Napoleonic War times. Fans of spy and historical mystery books will relish this story of Mary, who accepts a secret assignment on behalf of the Pink Carnations: to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Tulip, a French spy. Plots, subplots, intrigue and history blends with Eloise Kelly's research into early English espionage to make for a gripping story.
Crimson Rose June 25, 2008 M. Buchanan (Athens, GA, USA) I've always enjoyed the Pink Carnation series; mainly for the ridiculous love stories and quasi-historicalness. This wasn't my favorite one, but it wasn't bad. Unlike the previous stories, this main character isn't all sugary-nice perfection, and I liked that about her. However, I didn't feel like her 'romance' with the leading man Vaughn was very heartfelt or convincing. For example, they have a passionate moment while he's in bed, pale and sickly from a bullet wound. Uh huh. I was also highly aggravated by Eloise's snail-like pace pursuing a relationship with Colin. Come on all ready! They've barely held hands so far, Lauren Willig! Anyway, I'm sure you wouldn't be reading this book if you hadn't all ready read the other ones, so you probably will read this one too. Might as well.
So very dissapointing- and I LOVED her 3 other books- June 10, 2008 Artist (Memphis, TN United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was SO dissapointed with this 4th book of hers. I waited 6 months to get it. There is too much description of things like wall paper and things in the house. Not enough action of the spy nature at all. And for you ladies that love the big "finale" sex scene- well there is none to be had. Also, I found the book very, very, slow for the first third of the way through. In fact, I wondered if the same person had written it. Ms. Willig,if you are reading this,I really don't know what you are doing as a second year litigation associate at whatever law firm you are at, but anyone can do that. You have a true writing talent and you need to quit the law firm and concentrate on your gift for writing and put out new novels like the first three you wrote. Note to readers: I strongly recommend her first three books. They are so great!!! If you like historical romance/spy fiction. And spicy love scenes, but tastefully done!
Intriguing Series Continues May 9, 2008 Becky L. Davis (Sublimity, Oregon, USA) This 4th book in the series starting with THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION continues the mystery and fun of the earlier books. I really like the way Lauren Willig alternates between her modern day researcher, Eloise Kelly and the British spies from the era of Napoleon, where Eloise is working to uncover the identity of spy known as The Black Tulip. I wish Willig would spend a little more time developing the relationship between Eloise Kelly and her love-interest, Colin Selwick, but I look forward to each book that picks up where the one before left off. I would like it if Willig would briefly remind readers of how characters from previous books fit into the story, as the length of time between books makes it difficult sometimes to remember who people are, but I'm willing to read these books more than once to find out.
