5 out of 5 stars Nice looking and functional (albeit basic)   March 2, 2010

I looked at reviews on Amazon and also looked at the summary of Consumer Reports (Dec 08) review (I don't have a subscription so I couldn't see the full review). CR recommended 3 slow cookers: Hamilton Beach Set 'N Forget 33967, Rival Crock-Pot SCVC604H-SS and the Hamilton Beach Stay or Go 33162H. While the ability to program the Set 'N Forget model sounded great, the most recent reviews on Amazon (late 2009 and early 2010) made the purchase sound very risky as many people complained that after a few uses the unit would just quit mid-cycle. So, I bought this 33162H model figuring it was a safer bet. There are no surprises from the description - yes it's a nice oval size with a lockable lid (for use during transport - not cooking). Just 3 settings - warm, low and high. I use this to prepare meals for my dog and it holds 1 large turkey breast (2 halves) with lots of vegetables. The cooked result is the same as my older Rival that still works so I'd say the temperature is what you'd expect - at least on low.

5 out of 5 stars Everything it's meant to be   February 28, 2010

I have a couple of "crock pots" and have used them for years but they are just not right for many recipes. The Hamilton Beach slow cooker is a better shape, a bit larger in compacity, very easy to clean and easy to use. I love the locking lid for transporting it to gatherings. I did find that the included spoon is a little difficult to lock into the lid handle but it can be done. It does everything it is intended to do and does it nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Have owned for 3 years   February 19, 2010

My mom visited my new house in March of 2007, so it is just about 3 years old, exactly. She bought this as a present for me since I didn't have a slow cooker at TJ Maxx or Marshalls, so was probably less than the listed price.

Ironically I've never used it "to go" so cannot give any feedback on how waterproof and easily transportable it is. I have read other feedback and have to say that the handles and clips have never gotten in my way or been a problem. The front and back of the insert have extended lips which is what I use to grab the insert in and out - which are completely free from the sides, handles, and clips.

I love the included spoon, which is perfectly convenient to keep in the little handle groove while you're cooking and for serving. That's a nice feature and I haven't seen another slow cooker w/ that. When I use it I usually spray the insert first w/ non stick spray which makes clean-up easier. The insert is really heavy and sturdy - feels secure. Says dishwasher safe, but I prefer to handwash. I store the lid upside down on the insert so the rubber lip does not become deformed over time and keeps a tight seal.

For 2 years my job had me on a schedule where 2 nights a week I worked 1pm-8pm. This slow cooker was used steadily usually 2 or 3 nights a week during that time period. Since, it's dropped back to 2 or 3 times per month. I have NEVER had a problem w/ it overheating or not cooking fast enough. If I follow a recipe the suggested time is always spot-on. Keeping it on warm is convenient and has never dried anything out or made anything rubbery or tough. Every single meal cooked w/ this slow cooker has turned out perfect and edible.

Important to note: some reviews (I saw on other models of Stay or Go, not sure if this particular one) gave bad reviews for this overheating, not releasing enough liquids, or becoming hot to the touch! They are using the slow cooker wrong, most mention clamping the lid down. The lid is clamped ONLY DURING transition -- not for cooking! If you use it correctly as the instructions say, you will not have any of these problems.

I have been researching slow cookers the past two days to gift one to a friend and the consensus seems to be Hamilton Beach is the way to go. There are small problems here or there (as w/ any product), but overall their quality and price cannot be beat. I will decide on either this model, or a non stay-or-go one for my friend, but will definitely choose Hamilton Beach after all the sites and reviews I've seen of many products and heat tests. My mom has had a Rival crock pot since 1982 and swears by it, but even she got me the Hamilton Beach since the Crockpots aren't made the way they were. If you can score an old one at a thrift store or garage sale you're in luck - otherwise I'd stay away.

5 out of 5 stars Family of 7 keeps this item busy   February 11, 2010

My daughter wanted this for dinner because she has a large family and has a busy social schedule. She gets this unit fired up often and especially likes that she can seal down the cover and take the unit with her. Sometimes easy improvements make a good product even better.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier!   February 6, 2010

I bought this a couple of months ago and have
used it several times. I like it a lot and
would recommend it. It is study, well designed,
and performs exactly as I hoped.

The temperature control has three settings
(warm/low/high), and all three settings work
perfectly. I have had no problems with food
coming out either underdone or overdone.

I especially like that you can seal the cover
using the two retaining clasps...no more
spilling chili in the car while on the way
to a party! I also lock the top when I store
the crockpot away, which helps avoid dropping
and breaking the top.

One of the recipes I've done more than once
is lasagne. The oval shape is far easier for
that than round (which is what my 4 Qt Rival
is). I follow the traditional recipe right
off the noodle box, except that I put the
noodles in raw. That saves some work plus
and there is no difference in taste from using
cooked noodles. I cook it on high for 3 hours,
and the top comes out with a nice golden color,
just as if I baked it in an oven.

There is a serving spoon that clicks into
a holder on the handle. This is a nice touch,
but not an essential feature. The spoon would
be better if it were slightly bigger and easier
to click into its holder. Even so, I like
this crockpot so much that even if they didn't
have the serving spoon, I'd still give the
product high marks.

Lastly, the handle design is to be applauded!
The handles are much easier to grasp than I
am used to on my other crockpots. I didn't
have any specific expectations about the handles
when I bought this product, but after just
a few uses, I quickly came to appreciate the
advantages of this design.

John
