2 out of 5 stars plastic moving parts wear out   June 25, 2008

The connection between the blade assembly and the motor unit is made out of plastic and thus quickly wears out. A new blade assembly, again made out of the same plastic, costs $20 + shipping. If you turn this machine on once a day then you'll be going through at least one blade assembly per year. I should've bought a Waring.

1 out of 5 stars Powerful but poorly packaged   February 24, 2008

The rotary switch obviously got something in it, because it takes all my considerable strength to turn (hold everything tight, lest you toss your blender and contents on the floor). This was a nice concept very poorly executed.

3 out of 5 stars Great while it lasts   February 4, 2008

I wish I could recommend this made in the USA product but we don't always make long lasting products. This blender does perform great as long as you don't break any of the parts. OK, there really is only one part to break, the blade. I've broken it twice in the two years that I've owned it. Once by accidentally dropping it on my stone tile floor, the other time by just using it. That's right, it's supposed to crush ice easily, but I've never tested it with ice, just frozen fruit in very moderate quantities. The plastic holder for the blade still gave up. I'm going to get something more sturdy this time. The engine started giving off too much burning odor anyway and that just for making smoothies twice a week. Not good.

1 out of 5 stars Professional- NOT!!!   July 7, 2007

The label on the machne advertises it as being a Professional appliance. When you look underneath the machine, it states that it is for home use only. And it isn't even good enough for that.... The plastic gears between the motor and the blender blade easily strip. Viking should be ashamed to put its name on this piece of scrap. Get the top of the line Oster, with metal drive gears, and save yourself $$$.

4 out of 5 stars I Love My Blender   April 24, 2007

I was raised around good food and high quality tools to prepare that food. I know that if you want high quality, you must pay for it. That said, I still feel the price of this device just a bit excessive and that is why I gave it four stars.

I love my blender. I have had more blenders than I care to remember. The only difference price made was that it was an indicator of how long the blender will last. The more expensive models tend to last longer, but still don't last. The cheap ones might be replaced as much as two times a year. They are that bad.

When it arrived, I tested it by making my version of a frappucino that includes ice cream and lots of ice. In about thirty seconds I had a mix that was the exact consistency of a real frappucino. The ice had been cut into tiny pellets and it's consistency was perfectly even. I was amazed. It not only did a good job, but it also didn't complain. It didn't slow down, it didn't bog down, it didn't just stop altogether under the load of ice. I was completely amazed.

I use this blender regularly, as I prepare my own dog food. The dog food calls for pureed broccoli. Broccoli is a vegetable that resists being blended, but this can handle that, too. We also make our own peanut butter in it. Again, its' performance is stunning and the results are usually perfect.

This is a wonderful machine and one could reasonably argue that it is actually worth the hefty price. I have not seen one yet that comes close to it. Not only does it perform beautifully, it's design is equally beautiful. Gone are all of the superflous buttons, dials and knobs that we've come to expect. I learned instantly that those things aren't necessary and just more that can break. The Viking has two speeds; low and high, and it has a "pulse" option. It is the definition of elegant simplicity.

If you insist on high quality, dependable and durable kitchen appliances, this will not disappoint you.
