Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
For those who prefer a little "cutting edge" to their kitchen decor, the Dualit toaster in matte black offers just that - a chic steel-and-black combined with a retro-styled design. The Dualit Vario toaster has extra-wide, pressure sensitive, spring-loaded slots that allow you to use a new type of sandwich cage (sold separately), also by Dualit. With the sandwich cage, you can toast sandwiches inside your Dualit toaster - your gourmet goat cheese and Parma ham sandwich can be placed inside then inserted into the toaster slot. The sandwich cage's drip tray catches any cheese or filling that might fall out during toasting. Also unique about the Dualit Vario toaster is its award-winning ProHeat element, an adjustable thermostat and a Keep Warm function that warms without toasting. Switches control the degree of browning and the number of slots you wish to switch on. After toasting, your toast doesn't pop up (as it does with other toasters) but stays warm until the manual ejector knob in front is pushed up. There's also an adjustable rear foot and a removable crumb tray. About Dualit: It should come as no surprise that the man who invented the Dualit toaster was an engineer. In 1946, Max Gort-Barten produced the original Dualit toaster in his workshop just off London's Old Kent Road. This new toaster soon set new standards and was followed by one used commercially in restaurants. D

Amazon.com Review
Engineered in England and hand-assembled to the last detail, the Dualit 2-slice toaster is that ideal accomplishment--a hardworking kitchen appliance with an elegant presence. Its square-yet-curvy retro shape is undeniably handsome and its structural components withstand the rigors of a high-octane kitchen. In fact, the toaster can output up to 65 slices per hour, should the entire apartment building ever depend on you for breakfast or tea.

The key to Dualit's exceptionally even browning is the toaster's system of patented ProHeat elements, a series of flat bars behind a smooth, transparent coating. The result is an efficient, durable design, suitable for everything from brioche to sandwiches. The elements are encased by a rugged, stainless-steel housing that you may not even recognize as a relative of its lightweight, plasticky peers. Each slot measures 28 mm wide and is extra deep to allow for the use of the Dualit sandwich cage (sold separately). One adjustable leg accommodates uneven surfaces and rubberized feet protect your countertop.

The Dualit toaster has manually operated functions and is designed for people who like to engage with their appliances. Operation is simple but rewarding. A rocker switch selects 1- or 2-slice toasting, and a 4-minute timer knob lets you fine-tune browning time. Instead of a pop-up function that can prematurely cool toast, the unit comes with an ejector knob that you raise when you're ready for it. For bigger households or busy kitchens, the company also makes 3- and 4-slice models. All Dualit toasters come with a one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

5 out of 5 stars LOVEEEE THIS TOASTER!!   August 21, 2008
princess_workstoomuch (the wild wild west of Nevada)
I cannot fathom what some of these people are thinking when they say they do not care for this toaster. I moved across 2000 miles away and have yet to bring all of my things and this is the one appliance that I miss along with my kitchenaid mixer. If you love to cook and like versatality this is the toaster for you. It has accessories to toast sandwiches instead of getting out a frying pan and it is like nothing I have ever seen on the market as far as toasters go. I bought mine in black, but am eyeing the red one that I wanted, but was not available in the USA at the time mine was purchased.(I had even called England and begged way back when!) This one is a must for my kitchen and busy life. Some things just cannot get any better.

1 out of 5 stars Objective Review   August 16, 2008

Like another reviewer, I waited a couple of years to form my opinion. This product looks sturdy and people love the "legend of the Dualit". One side comment is that I find it very amusing that a manual toast lever is considered a winning feature.

Anyway, back to my review. Bread does not toast evenly. After time, the problem only gets worse. No real way to easily clean the inside of the toaster.

Bottom line is I love this toaster. What else can I say about a toaster that cost $300. The toaster either works great or I am bloody crazy for spending that kind of money. I choose to love the toaster.

1 out of 5 stars Junk! Don't Buy this Product or Anything Dualit!   April 30, 2008

I am embarrased I was taken in by the good looks and marketing hype. Ordered direct from Amazon, the first unit I received was clearly a refurb tho it was sold as new. Amazon replaced it promptly.

Soon after purchase one element began working intermittently and now it has failed completely. The number to call for warranty service provided with the product was disconnected. The Dualit website has no listing for how to get service. Sleuthing turned up the alleged authorized repair center who, of course, wants you to pay for shipping to ship the Dualit-junk-toaster to them. From the quality of the phone service and the feeling I have received so far, I might as well be shipping this useless toaster into a black hole.

This is NOT the quality nor quality of service that goes with a $200 toaster. If you're shopping, do yourself a huge favor and cross Dualit off your list.

Next time I will listen to the reviews and ignore the hype!

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money   March 5, 2008
Mizerello (Portland, OR United States)
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my sister 3 years ago. It was VERY difficult to spend $250 (purchased at Williams-Sonoma)on a toaster but she loved the look of it. I gave it two stars because it does look great. However, it doesn't work very well. It toasts unevenly and everything is cold--even if you are prepared with butter in hand and spread it in record time--by the time the toast hits your mouth...COLD!!!!

3 out of 5 stars What happened???   February 13, 2008
L. Tingley (Philadelphia, PA)
Tough as nails. I had one that saw tons of abuse for 14 years, finally, a heating element was torn by a kid poking a knife in. Couldn't find replacement elements to tried a Kitchaid toaster which was terrible. So bought another Daulit. Same rugged construction but the heating elements are completely different. Good part is that elements are smooth instead of squiggly, and covered with some kind of plastic--so no more worry about bad objects in the toaster. Bad part is that the design changes result in a shockingly slow cook-time and slightly uneven heating. Gets 3 stars because it will last forever. Only gets three starts because it takes so ridiculously long to cook a piece of toast.
