Amazon.com Product Description
Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player.

It handles not only your DVD-Videos (both NTSC- and PAL-formatted discs, depending on your TV), but it plays your music, too--everything from standard CDs to home-burned CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3-encoded CDs. Further, you can load a disc brimming with digital photos for custom slide shows in the comfort of your home theater.

An onscreen display simplifies setup and operation, and the unit comes with a compact, full-function remote control. Other features include parental controls (with PIN lock), frame-by-frame slow motion, picture zoom (2x, 4x), and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs).

Like to travel? The DVD-224 won't hog space in your bag, and an auto-switching universal power supply handles inputs from AC 110 to 220 volts (50/60 Hz) for use in most countries. Accordingly, the unit's onscreen display offers a choice of 5 setup languages: English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian.

A composite-video output ensures compatibility with nearly any television and many newer computer monitors. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (choose from either optical or coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A set of standard left/right RCA analog outputs simplifies hookup with traditional integrated amplifiers and most televisions.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

2 out of 5 stars As advertised but too loud   October 13, 2008
P. Keen (Minneapolis, MN)
I bought this DVD player to replace a DVD/VCR combo in the bedroom. The setup was a snap and removed the country code on the second try. It played all DVDs that I tried. However, the issue I ran into was the how loud the motor was. I was probably more sensitive to it because it was late at night and located in the bedroom with everyone else trying to sleep.

The return was easy. I wouldn't hesitate to buy something from BuyNow or Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Coby the piece of junk   October 12, 2008

I bought this dvd player it worked for one day and so I threw out the box and reciept and other paperwork on the very second day the player only spins the disk but would not play the disk whatsoevery looks like I got a piece of junk --- I am not at all satisfied with this player now it is just occuping the shelf space on my entertainment system

2 out of 5 stars Stopped Working After Six Months - Disposable   October 11, 2008
Robert Parducci (New York, NY USA)
We purchased this item as an inexpensive replacement for an Audiovox D1705 Portable DVD Player with 7-Inch LCD which recently died.

Setup was quick and easy. The player has S-video and progressive scan outputs. The remote takes some getting used to.

We now get a "Wrong Disc" error message from the unit. It is not worth the cost of repair. I am annoyed that we need to replace this item after such a short period of time.

Initially gave Coby four stars due to price and features. Revised rating to two stars. You get what you pay for.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality   October 11, 2008
T. Braun
This DVD player is a waste of money and time. The DVD tray would keep opening and shutting when I tried to put a DVD in. It wouldn't stay shut and wouldn't play any DVDs. I exchanged it for another, figuring it was just a dud. The second unit would play about 1/2 an hour into the movie, and then freeze up. It did this for every DVD I tried in it. Fortunately, Amazon paid for shipping and returned it with no problems. Basically, it's a cheap machine and you get what you pay more. Go with better quality and save yourself the hassle.

3 out of 5 stars Not Great But It's Cheap   October 6, 2008

Well, you get what you pay for, I suppose. I can't say that I'm all that impressed with many of the Coby products that I have bought. Their MP3s aren't very good and now I know the DVD players aren't a whole lot better. They are reasonably priced. That is what attracts so many people to their products. But, you can't expect much for your money either.
I bought 2 of these DVD players simultaneously (one for each of the kid's rooms). One of them has been working quite well, while the other has had a few problems. It doesn't always read the DVD and will sometimes stop playing. It usually will restart after a push of the button, but it is kind of annoying.
