Plastic smell doesn't go away August 17, 2008 Anonymous 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This kettle does indeed impart a plastic taste to the water, and I could not get it to go away. I filled my kettle with water and boiled it every day for a week, and between boilings I let water soak overnight to try to get rid of the plastic smell. Although the smell did improve after the first couple boilings, it never went away and I am going to return it. I've had other brands of plastic kettle that did not have this problem, and for that matter most coffee makers are plastic and do not have this problem, so Krups must be doing something strange in their plasticizing process.
Krups FLF2-J1 Electric Kettle, White and Stainless Steel August 9, 2008 Brian Ramkerrysingh Both products are excellent. They have worked very well with no problems and complaints. I have had them for a long time, and I would recommend them to any one. You will be very pleased with them and the cost too. Thank You.
Yes, it does smell June 2, 2008 Donald Varona (New York, NY) I didn't buy this through Amazon, but from a local retailer. I have to say that mine does have a chemical smell that even the pre-use boiling method did NOT remove. The smell is like some plastic solvent or manufacturing agent-- definitely chemical but not horrible. I can see how some would find it offensive; but I don't think it's dangerous. And I live in NYC where the water is one of the best municipal waters. On top of that, the water that I put into it comes out of a filtered system. The smell increases over time since the last rinse-out, and I have heated a dozen full capacity loads. When I use fresh water, I can barely smell the odor. If I let it sit in the container afterwards, the odor increases over time, and becomes so strong that I have to use a fresh fill. The water has less taste of the chemical, but it does have some if it's not fresh. Just because someone else has the smell but yours doesn't does NOT mean that they're doing something wrong. It makes your review sound like a shill review... but that's just a guess. Other than the smell, the product is very good. It heats water quickly, shuts itself off, and keeps the water pretty warm for a period of time. The stainless steel heating plate is good for ease of cleaning and preventing corrosion. The heating element is sealed in the carafe and can't be touched; a special base provides the power source so that the kettle is detached from the cord-- this is a nifty touch. The lid design is clever but a little over-engineered I think; it's easy to get in the wrong position while out of the carafe and then it's not clear what to do to get it back. But it keeps the spout covered and the steam and heat in.
Base Switch Broken May 25, 2008 RM (Scotland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After a couple of months the base-activated switch (not the one on the handle) began to malfunction. It's really not worth the hassle to deal with getting it fixed. I am just done with this brand.
