Amazon.com Review For centuries food has been cooked in earthenware pots over open fires or in brick ovens. Römertopf carries on this tradition by crafting clay pots and dishes specifically intended for cooking a variety of vegetables, meats, casseroles, and breads in the home oven. Manufactured in Mexico, each vessel is made from unglazed and porous terra cotta containing no lead or cadmium. Before each use, the pot is soaked in water in order to absorb a certain amount of moisture into the permeable clay. This moisture is slowly released during cooking, sealing in natural juices and increasing flavor and tenderness. Shaped like a head of garlic, the adorable garlic baker from Römertopf is perfect for roasting garlic to be used as a spread on bread or in soups, sauces, and gravies. Standing 5 inches tall and measuring 4-1/4 inches wide, this small baker can also be used as a serving dish. Intended to be used only in the oven, Römertopf recommends washing all clay pots by hand. Due to their porous and unglazed nature, the pots should not be exposed to extreme temperature changes. --Lea Werbel

roast whole heads of garlic October 8, 2008 Larry D. Schwensen 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great way to cook a whole head of garlic in the toaster oven. I soak the cooker for several hours before using it to insure moistness in the cooked garlic head. The directions say to use in conventional oven but I have found directions for other clay cookers that say they can be used in the microwave. I will update my review after I have tried this method to see how well it works (or doesn't work). Would not generate the heat of a conventional oven in the summertime.
must have for garlic bread April 5, 2008 Matt Shamblin (Raleigh, NC USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I take the garlic baker, soak it in water for a few minutes, then cut the top third off of a glove of garlic (just enough to expose the little pods inside) then brush it with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and fresh cracked pepper, then bake it in the oven on about 375 for 30 minutes. When it's done, you take the garlic out (allowing to cool) and you can just squeeze the garlic out of the little sections, because it gets reduced to the consistency of butter. You can squeeze it out onto bread, spread it around, and throw the bread back in the oven for a minute with the broiler on, and you've got healthy, simple, and delicious garlic bread.

My Wife and I love clay pot cooking. This item looks good on your counter and works perfectly. For the price you can't do any better.
