5 out of 5 stars Black & Decker toaster oven   March 17, 2010

Great toaster oven - large capacity. Digital controls readout hard to see, but other than that, it's a good product. I rec'd one for Christmas and bought another one for my son's birthday present.

5 out of 5 stars B&D CONVECTION TOASTER OVEN   February 20, 2010
CAPTAIN AL (TILGHMAN, MD USA)
A BLACK AND DECKER PRODUCT WAS CHOSEN BECAUSE B&D STILL MANUFACTURES SOME PRODUCTS IN THE USA. IT WAS DISAPPOINTING TO FIND THIS OVEN WAS MADE IN CHINA.
HOWEVER, IT IS WELL DESIGNED AND USER-FRIENDLY AND FITS THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL COOKING CAPABILITY IN EVERY KITCHEN. THE KEYPAD PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL KEYS FOR BAKING (USING CONVECTION FAN), BROILING, TOASTING BREAD AND BAGELS AND 12 INCH PIZZA COOKING, WITH PRE-SET TIME AND TEMPERATURE SETTINGS WHICH CAN ALSO BE ADJUSTED UP OR DOWN IF DESIRED. PRE-HEATING MODE AND TEMPERATURE ARE DISPLAYED ON A SCREEN, IN ADDITION TO COOKING TEMPERATURE AND A COUNT-DOWN TIMER DURING COOKING. COMPLETION OF COOKING IS ANOUNCED BY AN AUDIBLE SIGNAL. AS WITH ANY COUNTERTOP OVEN, CARE MUST BE EXERCISED TO NOT TOUCH OVEN SURFACES WHEN COOKING IS IN PROGRESS.

THUS FAR, THIS HAS BEEN A RELIABLE AND USEFUL ADDITION TO MY KITCHEN.

3 out of 5 stars needs more solid engineering   February 15, 2010

Do they make kitchen appliances that really last anymore?

2nd one I've purchased in 4 years. The last model was a smaller version and lasted about two years. The version shown lasted about two years (top two elements stopped working). My wife and I use it anywhere from 3 to 6 times a week. Worked well when it worked, but only lasts about two years. Considering upgrading to a Breville. the cost is quite different and difficult to justify at the moment. If I get 6 years out of it, it's worth my time and effort. It's three times the cost of this black and decker. In limbo and still don't know what to do. 80 for the b&d or 250 for the Brev.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't last, can't fix   February 14, 2010

We bought this toaster oven July 2008, after our very old B&D (16 yrs old) died. It is now February 2010, and we are now in the market for a new toaster oven. Not because we didn't like this one, but because it died--after only eighteen months. We called B&D "customer service," and were told that since the warranty had expired, there was nothing they would do. Not *could* do. Would do. Oh, they did offer to sell us a new one at full price. How nice of them...

I then had the idea that maybe I could actually fix this thing myself, so I got out the screwdriver and started unscrewing screws. That was going along just fine, until I got to a funky screw--a star-shaped thing like I've never seen before. Yeah, I've heard of these--proprietary screws so everyday folks like me can't actually get into the appliance. Just a few, strategically placed so there was no way to get inside the thing.

So, I can't fix it. B&D won't repair it, or even take any responsibility for it. Guess what brand of toaster oven we *won't* be buying to replace this one!

4 out of 5 stars Good Toaster Oven For the Price   February 12, 2010
The Coach (Massachusetts)
I bought this Toaster Oven about a year ago when our old DeLonghi Alfredo was about to give up the ghost. Other Toaster Ovens with similar features (Cuisinart, et al.) were twice as expensive. But would a Black & Decker, with its not-too-great reputation in TOs be worth it? So far, yes.
First, one needs to know that this oven is BIG. As in tall, deep, long. So make sure you have room for it. It is big enough for warming dinner-size plates, it comes with a small roasting pan, etc.
The controls take some time to learn. Basically, you have eight slots (bake, cookies, frozen snacks, etc.) to preset to your preferred temperature and then you're done. But you have to do this at first and there are no dials to set temp. or duration of cook, just plus-and-minus buttons with a LCD display.
Oh, and if you unplug the toaster, all presets go back to factory setting.
It toasts well. The front-load crumb tray is very useful.
The convection feature is a plus and seems to work.
It is loud: it beeps when turned on and when it goes off. It will, by the way, turn itself off when the particular task you have set finishes.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the exterior gets quite hot when in use. But that's all the TOs I've owned. I guess if you want more insulation, you gotta pay more for a Cuisinart.
The first thing I'd change about this TO is that the glass door has no spring or retention device to slow opening or closing. If you let it go, it falls to the countertop.
