not too shabby May 20, 2010 SMQ I have owned this for not quite a year. I purchased at the brick and mortar Target because I have a red kitchen and when it went on sale I couldn't resist even though I had a less than 6 months old black toaster oven that I wasn't unhappy with it. But this was bigger so I justified it to myself (oh, and it was RED :)
People are trashing this and I don't think they are justified. You have to understand its quirks. A) although it is bigger than your average toaster oven, it is NOT a convection oven. Stop, do not pass go, do you see what you paid for it? NOT a convection oven. OK B) As others have said, all toaster ovens are poor at toasting compared to a real toaster. I have a real toaster that I do my serious toasting with - I had to downgrade to a real 2 slice toaster because my real 4-slicer and this won't fit on counter. When I do have company and need to make 4 slices, I do use this and just WATCH it and make sure I have at decent temp on it. All toaster ovens take longer to make toast because the elements are not against the bread. Period.
Now the quirks. I only had it about a week, had been happy to heat up some mozzarella sticks, some chicken fingers, that sort of thing when I got the STUPID idea to make a 'homemade' pizza. I used that refrigerator pizza dough and laid it out in the baking tray provided and topped it and put in bottom slot and baked away. OMG. My fault for not being careful enough. Since it was so new and was still doing a little new stinky at first I didn't think anything, and then the smoke started pouring out. Again, my fault. I pulled it out. In this oven, the bake setting uses only bottom element. The bottom element is like a breath away from the tray when in bottom slot. I ruined the tray. Ruined it. And it is a nice tray. I am going to try customer service finally about purchasing another tray. My fault for not being fast enough getting it out of there. Understand that in this oven, the bake setting only uses the bottom element and the broil setting only uses top. You will have to be interactive and alert to bake evenly. Do not ever. Ever. Bake with tray on bottom for more than couple of minutes. There is no "middle" tray setting. That is really the top tray slot which does sit in the middle. Any high food can get a nice browning/bubbling on broil there. It is generally where you always want your tray/rack. The only reason they could possibly have for the low tray slot is to quickly crisp a pizza crust.
Overall, I love my red toaster oven and am hoping I can purchase another tray for it. I have been using itsy bitsy toaster oven tray on the rack and the ruined tray with heavy duty tin foil on it when I need something decent size. If you have red kitchen and you don't expect miracles from low-moderate price appliances you will be happy with this. I really am all things considered.
Sad it's got a bad rap March 1, 2010 V:) (Florida) Contrary to what so many people are saying about this oven, I'm quite happy with it. I bought it out of necessity as our B&D burnt out after many good years. My initial attraction to the Emerson was the candy apple red color and the larger size. We've had it now for a couple months and, after an obvious adjustment period, I find I have more options than with the B&D. As another review said, the temperature control and rack placement are key to getting what you want.
It's just two of us in the house and this oven's larger size keeps me from having to heat the whole house with the range. I've used it effectively to toast rolls, sliced bread, garlic bread and flatbread. I've baked a pizza, a variety of appetizers and quiches; and reheated many a leftover. I love it!
I gave it 4 stars because I very rarely rate anything 5-stars. Additionally, it's rather deep because of the extra rounding on the back to fit pizzas. Be aware of that and I'd recommend this to all :)
Just plain cheap! January 10, 2010 Marc Manganello (Iowa) I got this toaster oven at Target because it was big enough to fit a frozen pizza and the price was right. You get what you pay for, though. No matter how high you set the tray, this oven burns the bottom of everything. Furthermore, it tends to belch smoke if the slightest little crumb falls to the bottom of the oven. Sometimes it even produces a lot of smoke when you've made extra sure it's totally clean. Totally unsuitable anywhere there's a sensitive fire alarm. It's junk.
Difficult to use December 3, 2009 Erin F. Trites (Wilimington, MA) I bought this toaster oven to replace our old trustworthy one that finally died. At first, everything got burnt. Now I have adjusted the temperature, and always use the highest shelf slot, and can now toast bread without burning it. The knobs are hard to turn. The timer sometimes stops, and so the oven keeps right on toasting... On the bake setting, the bottoms of most everything gets burnt black, and the top barely cooks at all...I haven't figured out how to get things to cook evenly, without having to turn things over...if that's possible (not with pizza). Our last toaster oven was quite easy to use for everything from toasting bread and waffles, to cooking pizza, and baking bread rolls (like Pillsbury's crescent rolls). This one, which was more expensive, is only good for toasting...but NOT at the settings suggested in the manual..I had to figure that one out for myself. Not one I would recommend.
Honestly surprised November 26, 2009 Mark Minutolo 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am honestly surprised on several websites that have such negative reviews of this toaster oven. My mother-in-law has a high-end, super expensive toaster oven from a chef's store and my oven cooks more evenly and effectively in a shorter amount of time. You just have to use common sense and understand that it's an oven first and a toaster second. So if you're buying this mainly for toasting, then you've made a poor, over-sized choice. I do toast occasionally and move the rack to the center of the oven. So many people have complained about the burnt bottoms, but I wonder if they've ever treated this oven like an oven and remembered to move the rack. Once I made the move, my eggos and toast come out perfectly. And, as with EVERY toaster oven I've ever owned, it takes a long time to toast, because it's an OVEN! The professional toaster oven mentioned above takes even longer.
I use this toaster all the time for making quiche, muffins, pizza, chicken nuggets, baked apples, you name it. Just treat it like an oven. Understand that ovens need to preheat, that if you don't want to burn something, you need to set the temperature correctly, and sometimes the rack needs adjusting. Just like an oven, because that's what it is. I love it. It's one draw back is that it is not well insulated.
