Amazon.com Review
A waffle baker, grill, and griddle, this three-in-one appliance comes in handy during breakfast, lunch, dinner, and after school. Key to the unit's versatility are two 8-inch-square cooking plates--one set into the product's bottom and the other into the hinged top. On one side the plates form grids for making four waffles at once. Flipped over to show their flat sides they're capable of top and bottom grilling a sandwich or steak. To create griddle space, the top opens up flat, forming two 8-inch-square cooking surfaces for all foods that love a griddle--such as pancakes, hash browns, and eggs. Channels send grease to spouts in the griddles' corners, where it drains away. Nonstick to release food easily and wipe clean, the cooking plates also can be removed for scrubbing. A heat control offers high, low, and medium temperatures. With its chrome housing and stay-cool black synthetic handles, this 900-watt appliance looks great on the counter. Afterward, the cord wraps around the hinge, plus you can stand the unit upright for compact storage. It measures 11-1/4 inches wide, 5 inches high, and 11-3/4 inches deep and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

If you like the waffles like Mama made, then this is the griddle for you.

3 out of 5 stars Watch it or you'll set off the smoke detectors   May 11, 2008

We bought this one to upgrade from our previous waffle maker strictly because we wanted a bigger one. This waffle maker works fine and certainly met our objective of being "bigger." Unfortunately, the thing we miss most about our previous waffle maker is that this one lacks a beeper. It doesn't make any sort of sound to tell you the waffles are done cooking. So with the old waffle maker, my wife could put some in and sit down at the table to eat until it beeped, then she would get up to take that waffle out and put in a new one. With this waffle maker, she has to stand there watching it for the light to go off and keep the waffles from burning.

On the positive side, because it's bigger she can get through the entire batch of waffle batter quicker and just sit down and enjoy them after they're all done.

2 out of 5 stars Some negatives   May 9, 2008
philosoph (New York (in exile from Chicago))
Having owned this product for 1.5 years, I have noticed a number of negatives:
1. Nonstick coating chips *very* easily, much more easily that other nonstick items I own.
2. The upper griddle surface does not get as hot as the lower surface: this is fine when using the unit closed, but when using it open as a griddle the surfaces are not the same temperature.
3. Outside surfaces get very hot; you must be very careful so as not to burn yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Waffle Iron That Really, Really Works!   May 8, 2008
Dr. Thomas C. Schunk (Milwaukee, Wisconsin United States)

My wife and I spent a great deal of time researching and comparing waffle irons, evaluating each on price, performance, ease of use, and durability. Part of our research involved reading other customers' reviews, which were nearly all favorable, but our evaluation, except for durability, is based upon our experiences.

First, it's great to have a waffle iron that actually gets waffles done--i.e., crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a golden-brown appearance. The "Done" indicator light actually works and is, incredibly, accurate, too.

Second, this waffle iron produces large, square waffles with partitions to enable the user to easily divide the waffles into four. These fit very nicely in a toaster, so it's easy to freeze them and warm them anytime you need a "waffle fix."

Third, the plates are removable for washing, and they slip easily in and out of the frame, to which they are secured by small metal clips. The only negative comment we saw on this product was that the clips did not seem to work very well and needed to be bent to function. This has not been our experience: the clips on our waffle iron work exactly as they were intended.

Fourth, comparisons with other waffle irons left them in the dust: this product was clearly superior to others costing between two and five times as much.

Since we have not had our waffle iron for a long time, we cannot judge its durability, but other customers have indicated that it is good for the long haul, and, as far as we can tell, we will eventually agree.

In sum, this is a great product! It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and does it well, and much more cheaply than many others. We highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for healthy freezer waffles...   May 8, 2008
A. Erbter (Grand Rapids, MI)
I looked all over locally, after spying this one online, to get a bigger waffle iron to supplement my letter-blocks character waffler. I waited 3 weeks through Amazon directly previously and had cancelled my order. Placed this order and it arrived within days.

I use it every Saturday to make healthy whole-grain waffles for breakfast and to freeze for the school week. With 4 kids, we go through a lot of waffles and peanut butter for easy before-school breakfasts. The waffles come out fluffy and the perfect size for putting in the toaster frozen. Makes multigrain very well. I do brush veg oil on it about every 3rd time as recommended for safe measure and make sure I have enough oil in my recipe. Taking the grids out to wash is sooooo nice. I used the grill side once to make french toast and it turned out wonderfully too. I highly recommend it as a great multi-use appliance.
