Simple and durable, it makes a terrific set for those just starting out or for those of you who just need an everyday set. The highly fired pieces have a shiny gloss and are microwave and dishwasher safe. The 16-piece set comes with 4 of each: 10-in. dinner plate, 7.5-in. salad plate, 20-oz. soup bowl and 12-oz. mug.

Fantastic everyday dishes August 26, 2008 J. Lovejoy (Portland, ME United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife and I purchased a set of these when we first moved in together 6 years ago (though ours have a nice black check border which I can't find anywhere now). Since then, we've acquired a full set of Fiesta ware (wedding gift), but I still prefer the Cafeware by a long shot. They're the heaviest and sturdiest dishes I've ever used. The mugs and bowls are larger than most dish sets, making them perfect for cereal and coffee. If you're looking for something cheap and well worth the money, you won't be let down buying this set. A few dollars for something that will last you years is a pretty good investment in my book.
Great dishes for the price January 27, 2008 M. Mauldin (Charlotte, NC) Very sturdy casual dinnerware. Coffee mugs are strong and heavy. Everything arrived packaged secure and intact. We did purchase 4 more plates for convenience.
Buy this at your local Fred Meyer... March 10, 2007 Jane Doe (Pacific NW, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I looked for everyday dinnerware for a long time before I found this. I liked what I read about the Tienshan Cafeware. Then I noticed that Fred Meyer carries cafeware by Culinary Arts, which looks practically identical to this set. (I couldn't tell the difference, anyway.) So I bought 2 Culinary Arts sets of 16 when they were on sale at Freddies (30% off). Regularly priced at about $35 per set, I only paid about $48 for 2 sets of 16. (That's $1.50 per piece, and the sets had the mugs & bowls I liked!) Then about a month later it was buy-one-get-one-free, so they would have been only about $17.50 per set (about $1.00 per piece), even cheaper. We've been using them every day and they are terrific...heavy, glossy, simple, and the perfect white. True, the bowls don't nest nicely in the dishwasher, but I'll still choose them over our bowls that do. They are PERFECT for cereal. And my coffee tastes especially good out of the mugs (if that matters to you like it does to me). Anyway, if you want to be thrifty, shop Freddies. Plus, FM sells the pieces as open stock, too, so if you happen to break a piece (which we and our two-year-old son haven't done yet in the few months we've had them), you can easily buy a replacement piece.
best family dinnerware available December 3, 2004 L. Hazel (michigan) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought a couple sets of these in 1999.... many dropped, only one broke. They don't scratch or chip and they are perfect for kids - the weight keeps them in place a little better than typical thin china type dinnerware. Also thick enough to protect your hands from the heat of food/drinks. They are sturdy and reliable... One more good point- so far you can still buy more.
Now You Don't Even Have To COP Them!!! July 6, 2004 K. P. Coffaro (Cali) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is a fairly good starter set for peeps who dig heavy-duty, all-purpose restaurant or Bistro ware. It's inexpensive. Its high-gloss glaze is easy to clean. It isn't as apt to chip or break as standard china. The true meaning of "oven to table," it can also be employed to reheat foods. The thick porcelain retains the heat a long time, keeping foods warm. But don't push it; I had a small plate eventually crack at 375 degrees F. using it several times to hold up a roasting chicken. Still, this beats our expensive Mikasa oven-to-table, which shattered during the first attempt. (Much easier to clean than wire roasting racks; simply place saucer or dessert plate upside-down in baking pan.) What makes this restaurant ware so heavy and durable is not only its thickness, but a higher percentage of metallic minerals in the clay. So it is literally made of metal. Our main complaint is that the place setting consists of only the minimum number of pieces, there aren't many assessories, and it's hard to match exactly unless you know a good restaurant supply house. Therefore it's more suitable for mix-and-match, not really bad considering it goes with most bright white, narrow-rim or white and colored china, even the prissy Portmeirion Botanic Garden. We got ours from another mail-order catalog and it is slightly irregular, especially the latte mugs, which really require saucers (not included) cuz half of them tend to tip over. The bowls are pasta-type and a nice size, but we prefer an 8 1/2-inch salad plate.
